Pink Parcel Period Talk: Vagina Museum Founder Florence On Period Taboos

Wouldn’t it be easier if we were all more open about the perfectly normal bodily function we experience each month? We think so. Each week a member of our very own #PPSquad will be sharing her period stories with you. Read, comment, share your own. Every story is welcome here.

This week’s period talk is from Florence Schechter, the founder of the Vagina Museum, who says the tampon tax is ‘dehumanizing’…

Tell us about your first period…

“It was a snow day from school. I was sitting at home with my sister. I was 11 years old and I remember sitting on the sofa and just feeling like something was happening down there. It was all a bit funny and wet. I went upstairs and I went to the toilet, I pulled down my knickers and there was blood. I was very lucky that my mum gave me a book in advance like, ‘this is a period, this is what’s going to happen when you go through puberty’ so I knew everything that was happening but the sight of it just terrified me!”

How does your period affect you?

“I used to get lower abdomen cramps and lower back cramps. I have a feeling that my emotions go all over the place. I really should keep a diary to see if it is linked with my cycle or if it’s just me…”

Does your period empower you?

“Oh definitely! I have been having my period since I was 11, it’s a humungous part of my life. There’s nothing disgusting about it, it’s just a thing that happens. People sneeze, they fart, and they menstruate.

Period – yes or no?

“Period sex, yes! Absolutely. It’s just extra lubrication. It’s the best! It’s great! Also, orgasms – really great for cramps.”

Do you think periods are still a taboo subject?

“People are uncomfortable talking about it – men and women and all genders. In fact, the trans community have a lot of difficulties with menstruation. Not just about finding products but talking about it. Maybe they want to have them, maybe they don’t want to have them. Also, we still have the luxury tax on menstrual products! It’s just madness. It’s dehumanizing that we’re being told that having a period is a luxury.”

Do you suffer from hormonal skin?

“My skin definitely goes in cycles of being clear and breaking out with my period. I get mouth ulcers as well just before my period, which is really irritating. But, since starting on the pill, a lot of those symptoms have died down. I barely ever get cramps now and my skin is a bit calmer.”

What’s your period savior?
