On Your Period? 5 Reasons Not To Skip Your Workouts This Week
Exercising on your period is tough. You slept terribly, your stomach could pass for three-months pregnant and you’re giving the Cookie Monster a run for his money when it comes to raiding the snack cupboard. All you want to do is hurry home from work, switch into your onesie and get stuck into the fridge, and then Netflix. The gym? Yeah right.
But actually, exercising on your period is the key to getting your A-game back, says Esmee Gummer, Master Trainer at 1Rebel. She says, “Even though it’s probably the last thing on your mind, exercising on your period is a must. It releases those endorphins giving you a natural high. Your body temperature is higher than usual so you can really sweat out that heat and finish with a cool shower.”
According to Esmee, you don’t need to take it easier than normal, “Your body is stronger than you think and it’s more a mental push you need.” However you can pick exercises that target symptoms you might be experiencing. Read on for our expert’s recommendations of what workout to choose when you’re on:
You’ve got back pain
Esmee recommends yoga, “It’s beneficial not only for relaxing the body and mind but also releasing muscle tension in the back. The downward facing dog pose will particularly loosen tense muscles.”
You’re feeling bloated
Swimming is great for soothing swollen tums, according to Esmee. “Bloating is horrid when you are on your period because it makes you feel worse than you actually are. Swimming is a great way of exercising with low impact and naturally relaxing tension through motion.”
You’re feeling fatigued
Controversial advice coming up: don’t go to bed, go for HIIT. Esmee says, “High Intensity Interval Training means short bursts of energy over a period of time. 20 seconds of your maximum effort with a short break will keep you engaged and your energy levels will go through the roof.”
You’re feeling stressed
The most important thing when you’re feeling frazzled is to do some – any – exercise. Esmee says, “Nothing is more effective than the natural kick of endorphins released around your body. For an extra release try boxing – there’s nothing better than beating a bag down and feeling all your troubles melt away.”
