The Real Reason Why Your Period Makes You Feel Fat
We know that periods can cause you to bloat, but your brain is also guilty of creating those period fat-days!
Do you have a pair of trousers that come out once a month? We do. They’re very comfy, have an elasticated waist and help us through those tricky days when our period causes us to balloon up like a puffer fish.
However, new research shows our brain could also play a big part in our ‘fat days’.
A study published in the International Journal of Eating Disorders, reveals that our brain can cause our preoccupation with feeling fat around that time of the month.
The study took 352 women and studied them for 45 days. They monitored their weight, along with their thoughts on body issues and how much they indulged in emotional eating. Hormones were also monitored during this time via saliva samples.
The results showed that while weight preoccupation was highest during pre-menstrual and menstrual phases, this wasn’t due to hormones. Instead these fat feelings actually stem from PMS cravings and emotional eating, which many women enjoy more during their period. However, weight gain was seen to be non-existent or very minimal, showing it was really all about perception rather than reality.
What to take away from this study? That gorging yourself on ice-cream/chocolate/chips (delete as appropriate) for a couple of days may make you feel like you’ve put on weight, but it’s actually unlikey that you will.
Excuse us while we go and raid the chocolate aisle in the supermarket…
