Period Talk: Rebecca, Co-Founder of Balance Me

This week’s period talk is from Rebecca, co-founder of natural skincare brand Balance Me.

How do you look after yourself during your period?

“I really try to recognise and accept that I will have one day when my period is quite heavy ­– I think it’s ok to embrace that and not try to be superwoman. You’ve just got to give in to it a bit and be kind to yourself.”

When I’ve got my period I like to…

“Drink fresh mint tea – hot water poured over mint leaves – to help with the tummy bloating. I find that a cup of hot water, lemon and ginger is great too because it really helps with flushing your body of toxins. Also, it’s worth accepting that you’re probably going to binge on chocolate – that does happen, but balancing your diet will ultimately make you feel better.”

I deal with period pain by…

“Not being afraid to take a painkiller, because let’s face it, there’s nothing worse than being in pain when you know you’ve got to keep going. You don’t want to be in an important meeting and feel really rotten, so I’ve tried to learn about my cycle and anticipate it, rather than being surprised by my body and then being unprepared.”

Any tips for handling PMS skin?

“Yes. I always try to listen to my body, which means I might not go for a run that week and I’ll switch it for a nice yoga class instead.”
