Unmissable! The Five Edinburgh Fringe Festival Females You Have To See

A ton of talented peeps have descended on Scotland’s capital city this month, as the Edinburgh Fringe Festival celebrates its 70th year. Yep, the world famous arts celebration has been going for nearly three quarters of a decade! From spoken word to incredible artwork and laughs aplenty, there’s something for everyone to enjoy between 4th and 28th August.

Comedians are regarded pretty highly at the festival, and we’ve got our eye on quite a few ladies who bring the laughter this year. Heading up to Scotland to catch a show, or five? Check out these lot:

Sara Pascoe: Lads Lads Lads

2017SARAPAS_PA

Following the success of her book and sell-out live tour, Animal: The Autobiography of a Female Body, comedian Sara Pascoe is back with a brand new show. Even more autobiographical this time around, Sara takes us through her very real break up from a fellow comic last Christmas and finds the humour (there’s a lot of it) in the journey of finding herself again. Sidenote: the recount on her PMS is bloody hilarious, and sticks two fingers up at previous criticism that her comedy is “too tamponny.” Whatever that means.

Pleasance Courtyard (Venue 33)

Sara Schaefer: Little White Box

2017SARASCH_HH

A Fringe debut, Little White Box is a whip-smart comedic masterpiece from a second must-see Sara on our list. In the show, Sara confronts her complicated relationships with Jesus, America and death, but it’s all pretty tongue in cheek. With an Emmy under her belt, her own MTV show and appearances on Comedy Central and Late Night with Jimmy Fallon too, she’s been named as one of Huffington Post’s Favourite Female Comedians and she is fast becoming one of ours too.

Where: Pleasance Courtyard (Venue 33)

The Lulu Show: Life on the Never-Never

2017LULUSHO_BDH

Combining cabaret and comedy with a dash of swinging jazz, Norwegian award-winning actress and singer, Hilde Louise, becomes Lulu. Straight talking and witty as hell, Lulu gives a masterclass in how to go bankrupt in style. She ponders upon the simple pleasures of spending money we know we don’t have, how we become embroiled in an affair with Mr Bankman that we just don’t want, and the fact the financial industry is basically killing us all off.

Where: Gilded Balloon at Rose Theatre (Venue 76)

Fleabag

2017FLEABAG_UK

“Funny, flirty, and filthy,” as described by the Metro, Fleabag is smart, crude humour that will have you laughing until you cry. Originally, a one-woman play from Phoebe Waller-Bridge performed at Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2013 – and winning a Fringe First Award – it was  created into a successful BBC Three TV show. It follows Phoebe’s Fleabag character in her attempt to live her life, being a work hard, play hard, fun loving, in control woman in London Town. And we all know what a minefield of mishaps that is.

Where: Underbelly, George Square (Venue 300)

Shazia Mirza: With Love From St Tropez

2017SHAZIAM_GB

You may have heard of Shazia’s ‘The Kardashians Made Me Do It’; the critically acclaimed tour went international in 2016 and delighted audiences all over the world. Her Edinburgh Fringe 2017 stand up is all about truth, lies, nudity…and the periodic table. These are the things that hold the key to the future, dontcha know! Thought provoking, wise-cracking and so damn funny, we’ll be quoting punchlines for months to come.

Where: Gilded Balloon Teviot (Venue 14)
