3 Books To Read About Essential Self-Care

Self-care is a big-deal buzzword in the world of wellbeing, but what does it *actually* mean? A quick hashtag search on Instagram will throw up “I’m worth it” slogans and dreamy bath time pics a plenty, but in short, self-care is about loving yourself enough to care for yourself properly. It’s all about knowing what your body and mind needs to be happy and healthy, and then making those things a priority so that you can thrive. Sometimes though, that’s easier said than done. So in light of giving yourself the time, care and attention you deserve, here are three of our favorite books to learn more about self-care.

For no-nonsense self-care tips

Self-Care for the Real World by Nadia Narain and Katia Narain Phillips

Kate Moss, Sienna Miller and Reese Witherspoon have all raved about the wise words and insightful tips in this new self-care bible. Written by two wellness pioneers and sisters – Nadia, a yoga teacher, and food chef Katia – it’s packed with easy rituals and small, achievable steps to create realistic, healthy habits in your life. From self-care tips for traveling, to advice on finding your tribe, this guide feels authentic and relevant for anyone juggling modern life and in need of a bit of straight-talking.

“If you feel you are the best version of yourself, you will have more to give and to contribute to the world.”

For everyday self-care habits

The Little Book of Self Care by Mel Noakes

How often do you fully intend to start a new self-care ritual or routine, only for weeks and months to pass by with zero positive change? We hear you. The Little Book of Self Care aims to change that, with everyday ideas on how to nourish, not punish yourself and how to make lifestyle changes for the better. “Self care isn’t something you do on ad-hoc days, or just on the bad days, or when you have enough money to do things. It’s not about bubble baths or facials (although they’re lovely treats). Self care is the everyday commitment you make to yourself to look after and treat yourself with the love and respect you deserve,” says author Mel Noakes who battled with stress, an eating disorder and low self esteem until she turned her life around and became a self-care coach. The book is divided into Mind, Body & Life sections and is digestible enough to dip in and out of when you’re seeking a little direction or inspiration.

“It’s far better to set smaller, easily attainable milestones for yourself so you stay committed and empowered.”

For self-care your way

You Do You by Sarah Knight

Ahh we’re totally on board with the saying “You do You,” because what else sums up so perfectly the permission to do things your own way. In this book – the brilliant sequel to bestsellers The Life-Changing Magic of Not Giving a F**k, and Get Your Sh*t Together – we’re urged by the anti-guru author Sarah Knight to throw away the self-care rule book and do things exactly how we want to, to feel good. Her liberating and empowering advice offers a new way of getting what you need to thrive and live life on your own terms, which is ultimately the best way for your health and happiness. Think of this as kick-ass self-care – without a candle in sight.

“Being yourself should be the easiest thing in the world.”
