Discover The Toast That’s Almost Too Pretty To Eat

If you’re a sucker for a piece of toast, we hear ya. It’s that trusty go-to when your period cravings kick in/the cupboards are bare/you’ve got a hangover/you really, really can’t be bothered to cook.

But apart from smearing on some avo and sprinkling a few chilli flakes, how often do you go beyond basic with your toasted bread?

Enter food stylist Adeline Waugh for a little #toastspiration. Instagram has gone crazy for her super-sweet unicorn toast and her mermaid toast is just as magical.

Today she’s showing us how we can make them both….toasters at the ready girls.

Mermaid toast

Ingredients

  • cream cheese (regular or almond milk cream cheese will work fine)
  • spirulina powder
  • chlorophyll drops
  • a piece of toasted bread
  • a butter knife

How to make

  • Add very small amounts of chlorphyll and spirulina to the cream cheese, mix it together and see what the colour ends up looking like.

  • If you want a deeper or more pigmented color, add a little more, bit by bit, until you have the colour you desire.
  • Add a base of plain white cream cheese to the toast, and then start swiping the different blues and greens on in a motion mimicking waves. Just have fun with it!

  • Because it doesn’t taste of anything except cream cheese and spirulina/chlorphyll, so you might want to add some toppings when you eat it for more of a satisfying experience. Go for cucumbers, tomato or fruit cut into shapes.

Unicorn toast

Ingredients

  • cream cheese (regular or almond milk cream cheese will work fine)
  • a piece of toasted bread
  • a butter knife or chopstick

How to make

First off, you have to create the cream cheese colours. You can follow these exact recipes or you have the freedom to play around and create your own. If you wanted a sweeter toast, you can substitute cream cheese for a thick plain yogurt, or simply add a drop or two of your favourite sweetener. Additionally, you can alter the amount of colouring you add and the pigment will change drastically, i.e, add more drops of beet juice and you will have a deep/hot pink, add one or two drops and you will have a pastel pale pink.

Here are the recipes for the traditional unicorn toast colours. To create each colour use about 2 tablespoons of cream cheese

Hot pink (Beet Juice)

Start out with about 1 teaspoon worth of beet juice and slowly increase the amount until you reach the desired colour

Orange/Yellow (turmeric root)

Juice or blend about a 1 inch knob of turmeric root. Add a few drops slowly to the cream cheese until you reach the desired shade of yellow/orange.

Light green (chlorophyll drops)

Start out with about 3 drops of chlorophyll and increase until you have a light shade of green.

Light blue (spirulina powder)

To achieve the light blue colour, you need a very tiny amount of spirulina powder, about 1/4 tsp.

Purple (freeze dried blueberry powder)

Take about a tablespoon worth of freeze dried blueberries and mash them in ziplock bag to create the ‘powder’. Add the powder to your cream cheese little by little until you have the desired shade of purple.

Light pink (beet juice & freeze dried strawberry or raspberry powder)

Take about a tablespoon worth of freeze dried strawberries or raspberries and mash them in ziplock bag to create the ‘powder’. Add to the cream cheese and include a tiny bit of beet juice if you want the pink to really pop.

  • Start with plain cream cheese as a base, because then when you add additional colours and blend them, those colours will mix with the white in certain areas to create more dynamic hues.

  • Add a dollop of each coloured cream cheese.

  • This is where things start to get interesting. With no particular method or reason, simply start mixing the colours around. You can use a chopstick, or a butter knife to do this.

  • Add a few more dollops of colour if needed and then add some coloured sprinkles to finish
