This Takes Less Than Two Minutes But It Could Save Your Life

Last week at PP HQ we were lucky enough to have a visit Cathie from UK breast cancer charity CoppaFeel! She spoke eloquently to us about the signs and symptoms of a disease that will affect one in eight women over their lifetime and 400 men each year.

How to spot the signs of breast cancer

Pink Parcel HQ and Boobette Cathie (front): not afraid to coppafeel

CoppaFeel! want to educate people to ensure breast cancer is diagnosed at the earliest possible stage – saving lives in the process. Their aim is for everyone to know the signs of breast cancer and regularly check their breasts for changes.

Their squad of Boobettes – a group of young women who have been affected by breast cancer – are natural ambassadors for the charity and spread the word by sharing their experiences.

Our Boobette was the inspiring Cathie. Cathie was just 29 when she was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of breast cancer. Her baby was eight weeks old at the time. After undergoing a single mastectomy and chemotherapy combined with other treatment, she recovered, but will take medication to minimize the production of oestrogen – which stimulates the cancer cells – for the next ten years.

Cathie realized that she had ignored some of the signs of the disease, which appeared when she was pregnant. When she did seek medical help, doctors initially told her it was pregnancy related. Now, she is passionate about raising awareness of this devastating disease.

The signs of breast cancer

So what are the signs? It’s important to know what is normal for your body – if your gut is telling you something isn’t right then get it checked out. Signs and symptoms to look out for include:

  • Changes in skin texture like dimpling or puckering
  • Lumps or thickening of skin
  • Nipple discharge
  • Nipple inversion or changes in direction
  • Swelling in your armpit or around the collar bone
  • Constant pain in your breast or armpit
  • Change in breast size or shape
  • Rash or crusting of the nipple
