Why Green Tea Is The Beauty World’s Next Big Skincare Ingredient

Green tea has long been hailed as a super-healthy elixir thanks to its arsenal of ingredients, from B vitamins and naturally occurring folic acids to potassium, magnesium, caffeine and other antioxidants. But, did you know it‘s actually bursting with beauty benefits, as well as the well-documented body benefits, too? Here, we take a closer look at the superfood and its transition from mug to make-up bag.

Where does green tea come from?

Green tea may be readily available these days – a quick breeze through the tea aisle at your local supermarket, and you’re brewing the kettle in no time – however, it actually originated in China, with some dating its consumption as early as the 12th century. These days, it’s produced all over East Asia, and there are many different types.

Green tea is made from Camellia sinensis leaves, the same leaves as black and oolong teas, but the process they go through post-harvest differs. Fresh leaves are steamed to become the detox drink we know and love, while black and oolong teas require fermentation.

What’s so great about it?

Green tea contains naturally-occuring active ingredients, like vitamins B2, C and E, that are antioxidant and anti-inflammatory. On top of that, green tea contains folic acid, potassium and calcium. Sounds pretty full of the good stuff, right?

But *why* is it so good for your skin?

Each of these elements work hard for your skin in the following ways:

  • Anti-inflammatory: It will ease any swelling, or redness, in the skin making for calmer skin.
  • Antioxidant: Antioxidants protect the skin from cell damage, therefore reducing the signs of aging for a brighter, healthier appearance.
  • Folic acid: Usually associated with pregnant women, as it is vital for fetal growth, folic acid also improves the moisture retention in your skin and alleviates dryness.

So, how can we incorporate it into our skincare routine?

Well, there are many ways. Of course, you can reap the benefits by drinking green tea; just brew the leaves or tea bag in boiling water and enjoy. Or, if you’re feeling creative, you can add it in powdered form (called matcha) to things like smoothies, or porridge.

However, our personal fave is adding it directly to our skin. Evelyn Iona Cosmetics, who use natural ingredients to create their beauty products, have incorporated the superfood into their primer, and we’ve incorporated the full size product into February’s Pink Parcel. And, #trendsetter points, the only place you can currently buy it in the UK is our Pink Shop! The product is suitable for even the most sensitive skin and creates an even base for foundation, powder and bronzer. As well as indulging in the benefits above, the primer smoothes fine lines and makes pores look smaller – bonus!

Evelyn Iona Cosmetics Green Tea Primer is available in February’s Pink Parcel and from the Pink Shop. If you haven’t signed up to Pink Parcel yet, it’s time to start enjoying your period! Subscribe here and you’ll have everything you need (and want) sent directly to your door.
