#TabooTuesday: Is ‘Period Glow’ A Thing?

Pregnancy glow is one of the lovely perks of having a baby. Your hair becomes thick and lustrous like a Pantene model, your skin is super radiant and even your nails become extra strong (bye bye falsies) – you basically become the picture of wholesomeness and healthiness, but what about when you’re menstruating? Is ‘period glow’ a thing too?

It turns out there is a kind of ‘sweet spot’ during your menstrual cycle in which you will dazzle like Beyoncé, but it doesn’t last long. Your time to shine is post-period, when your oestrogen is at its highest (just before ovulation).

“During this time, skin tends to be hydrated, pores appear smaller, and collagen production is increased,” says Debbie Palmer, MD, a board certified dermatologist and the medical director of Dermatology Associates of New York.

About two weeks later though – sadly for your dazzling Beyoncé glow – an egg leaves your ovaries triggering another pesky hormone that ups your skin’s oil production, which causes blemishes and pimples.

“Skin tends to look its worst during the days leading up to your period,” says Dr. Palmer. “There is a decrease in oestrogen and surge of progesterone and testosterone about a week before your period. This surge can cause oil production and pores to become clogged with sebum, making them appear larger.”

So, there you have it, ‘period glow’ is an actual thing, even if it is restricted to a pretty small window. All you need to do now is learn your dates and when the time comes, embrace your inner Bey…
