Pink Parcel Period Talk: Joanna, Partner Relations Executive

Wouldn’t it be easier if we were all more open about the perfectly normal bodily function we experience each month? We think so. Each week a member of our very own #PPSquad will be sharing her period stories with you. Read, comment, share your own. Every story is welcome here.

This week’s period talk is from Joanna, our Partner Relations Executive.

What’s your period craving?

I massively crave junk food! This month I’ve had McDonald’s on repeat and I can’t seem to stop baking brownies.

I know my period is coming when…

I start getting moody at things I wouldn’t usually care about. I also become really clumsy and uncoordinated. A nice headache arrives too a couple of days before I actually start as if my body has put the hazard alarm on.

Tell us about your first period…

My period arrived on the eve of my thirteenth birthday. I was sat on the sofa with my brother and my dad and I just felt it start. I remember going to the bathroom and being like ‘OMG’. I had heard all the girls at school talking about their periods and I almost felt left out I hadn’t had mine yet. Little did I know it’s not all that great. To start with, my periods were very irregular and heavy. I remember waking up one morning in what can only be described as a crime scene. They soon lessened. I learned that my periods would differ if I was stressed. School can be a mad time with exams, so I always knew to bring extra pads!

My period cringe is (hey, we’ve all had them)…

I have countless embarrassing period stories. I was once on a really heavy period and I went to the cinema. Throughout the film I could feel it but it wasn’t till the near end of the film that I realised I was in trouble. I knew exactly what had happened. I had bled through my towel. Me and my friend had to race out before the lights came on at the end with my coat tied around my waist.

Your favourite thing to do when you have your period is…

Have hot showers! I feel so gross when I’m on. My hair will be flat and greasy and I always feel clammy. There’s nothing better than having a nice hot shower, moisturising, putting on some comfy pjs and watching something trashy on Netflix.
