Pink Parcel Period Talk: Gemma, Partner Relations Manager

Wouldn’t it be easier if we were all more open about the perfectly normal bodily function we experience each month? We think so. Each week a member of our very own #PPSquad will be sharing her period stories with you. Read, comment, share your own. Every story is welcome here.

This week’s period talk is from Gemma, our Partner Relations Manager.

What’s your period craving?

I always crave Quavers and cottage cheese – that’s using my Quaver to scoop out the cottage cheese. You must try it! Also, Dark Chocolate Digestives (I could eat a whole pack!)

I know my period is coming when…

I get serious back ache and hot flushes, I must be getting old! Oh, and the usual spots around my chin…

Tell us about your first period…

I was around 11-years-old and very (typically) moody! I actually woke up in the night to find that it had arrived whilst I was asleep. It kinda felt awkward and embarrassing as it had obviously leaked on my bed sheets. Luckily my mum was on hand to help!

Tell us a period cringe (hey, we’ve all got one)…

Sooo, we’ve all been there when we thought our period had finished only to find out two days later that that’s a massive lie and of course we’re still bleeding… I remember how this once got me at school, so I had to nicely fold a piece of toilet paper and pop it in my knickers, y’know, to get me through. But the pesky thing wasn’t well behaved and ended up falling down inside my tights! Aghhhhhhh! I don’t know if anyone saw, but the thought of knowing I could have been walking round like that was just so bloody cringey.

Your favourite thing to do when you have your period is…

Well, my period usually last around 7 days – b*llache! – but I tend to go the gym as much as I can as I have an underactive thyroid. Having a period as well as a thyroid disease usually makes me feel more tired, less energised and so on. Going the gym really boosts my energy levels and doesn’t make me feel so podgy!
