Period Talk: Fitness Star Jade Joselyn On Losing Her Periods

Wouldn’t it be easier if we were all more open about the perfectly normal bodily function we experience each month? We think so. Each week, we’ll be speaking to one woman about her menstrual cycle, from cravings and coping with PMS to period confidence. Read, comment, share your own. Every story is welcome here.

This week’s period talk is from Jade, a fitness blogger and YouTube star who reveals how dancing caused her to lose her periods…

Tell us about your first period…

“It was actually quite scary because all my friends were starting to develop and get their periods – I knew I was a lot later on, I was 14. I’m the only girl as well, I’m the oldest and I don’t have a cool auntie or cousins or anything, it was just my mum. I think because I’d grown up watching her I kind of knew what to do. So, I just went about my business, very confident, but after a while I thought I need to tell her because she needs to go buy me things…”

How does your period affect you?

“I’ve had a bit of a rollercoaster with my period. When I was dancing full-time I lost my period completely. I was so afraid because I didn’t know why it had gone, but then I was too afraid to go to the doctors to ask them. I think because I was embarrassed about my period I just ignored it, and then when I did get it back it came back so much worse. I’d never experienced cramps badly before but they were really bad – so bad I would be huddled over in bed and not able to go to school! Now I think I’m a lot more confident in myself and in tune with my body.”

Do you work out when you’re on your period?

“Fitness is such a huge part of my life. I love going to the gym every other day and it brings me so much happiness but when you’re on your period and you’re feeling a little crappy or sluggish I think listening to your body is the most important thing. I personally have had girls speak to me and say ‘I’m on my period, I really don’t feel well but if I don’t go to the gym am I going to lose my progress?’ When you’re in a situation like that and you don’t want to go work out, or you don’t want to go and see your friends or go to a nightclub, just doing you is probably the most important thing.”

Do you suffer from hormonal skin?

“For sure! Especially as a teenager, I couldn’t control it. I would always, always breakout around my chin. I still get little breakouts every now and again. It’s actually quite funny now that I’m getting older because I know that when I get spots my period is due. Before I was like ‘why is this happening!?'”

Tell us a period cringe (we’ve all got one, hey…)

“I remember I was at a dance class and we wear shorts – I’m pretty sure they were white or baby pink – and I got my period and I just sobbed! I was in the bathroom just sobbing and one of the older girls came in and she was really nice. She brought shorts (she had a spare pair) and she sorted me out. Actually, looking back I remember that but she probably doesn’t! But I remember just sobbing because I didn’t know what to do and the last thing I wanted to do was get in trouble!”

What’s your period saviour?

“Definitely a hot water bottle in bed, warm drinks, TV, comfort foods like soul foods – just things that make you feel snuggly. It’s your body and you need to love it when it needs you.”
