Pink Parcel Period Talk: Becky, Assistant Brand Manager

Wouldn’t it be easier if we were all more open about the perfectly normal bodily function we experience each month? We think so. Each week a member of our very own #PPSquad will be sharing her period stories with you. Read, comment, share your own. Every story is welcome here.

This week’s period talk is from Becky, our Assistant Brand Manager.

What’s your period craving?

I know it’s the ultimate cliché but I crave chocolate. Soooo much chocolate. I’ve been known to eat a whole 200g bar of Cadbury’s Fruit and Nut, and then still scoff a Creme Egg straight afterwards. A real winner is melting a bar of Cadbury’s Dairy Milk (has to be Cadbury’s, obvs) and mixing in Rice Krispies then just eating it straight out of the bowl when it’s still warm. My waist doesn’t thank me for it, but it does ease the cramps!

I know my period is coming when…

I cry at everything. My boyfriend Jak says I turn into ‘Sadness’ out of Disney Pixar’s Inside Out just before my period. Long day at work? Angry tears. Put on 1lb at Slimming World? The whole world seems to end. If I’m not crying, I turn into a right moody cow and start being unreasonable about everything. It usually only lasts about 2-3 days on the run up though!

Tell us about your first period…

It decided to make its appearance on the day of my Year 6 leavers’ assembly. There I was singing my heart out to a repurposed version of Gareth Gates’ ‘Spirit in the Sky’ (aka ‘I’m going up to Woolston High’) feeling a little bit weird and uncomfortable down there, not realising what was actually happening. It was only when I got home and pulled down my knickers I realised what it was. Luckily, my mum and I have always had an amazing open relationship. She was the first one I called upstairs, where she showed me how to put on a pad and started telling me how often I had to change it etc. I naively thought periods only lasted a day! How wrong I was…

Tell us a period cringe (we’ve all got one, hey…)

Having started my period at the end of Year 6, I spent my whole high school life battling heavy periods until I eventually went on the Pill to ease it. They were that bad, I used to leak through my pads quite a lot so the school nurse gave me a special pass (laminated and everything) that allowed me to go the toilet whenever I wanted during class. I used to cringe so much when I had to show it to my favourite male teacher, and of course all the boys wanted to know what it was for *rolls eyes*.

Your favourite thing to do when you have your period is…

Have a hot shower (I always feel a bit yuck when I’m on), moisturise and pamper myself like crazy, put on some fresh pjs and snuggle down next to Jak with my favourite TV shows. He’s great during that time of the month, always knows when I need chocolate and doesn’t freak out during my emotional cry fests – just hands me the choccy and offers a cuddle.
