Could Your Period Be To Blame For Your Latest Shopping Spree?

Popped to the supermarket for a pint of milk and came home with three bikinis, a summer dress and a wide-brimmed hat that Lady Gaga would be proud of? We all suffer from impulsive sprees every now and again. Actually, probably once a month. Hmmm. You see where we’re going with this… Could your period be to blame for your hasty shopping habits?

The rise of the ‘hormone of desire’

As you move towards ovulation, during week two in your monthly cycle, your body releases more testosterone.

This hormone, traditionally seen as a male hormone, alongside other hormones such as oestrogen, helps your body to shed the uterine lining without damaging your health.

However, testosterone is also known as the ‘hormone of desire’ as it can increase your libido, helping you achieve orgasms easier and also making you want to jump on every man you see.

Combined with oestrogen, it also improves assertiveness and confidence. This is great if you’re starting a new job or taking on a new challenge, however, maybe not so good if you’re starting a new relationship.

The combination of increased libido with a more daring and impulsive take on life may mean you make some wrong decisions when it comes to dating – or getting married!

How to curb impulsive behaviour during your period

Spending: If shopping is your downfall, then it’s best to stay away from the shops during this part of your menstrual cycle. However if that’s not possible – lock your debit and credit cards away and take only the cash you need. If you haven’t got it, you can’t spend it!

Eating: If food is your weakness, try and choose the slightly healthier version of your favourite comfort foods. Instead of a family sized bar of Dairy Milk, opt for 3 squares of good quality dark chocolate. If crisps are your downfall, try salty popcorn. You’ll still feel like you’re treating yourself but without the added calories.

Drinking: Your new impulsive nature may mean you hit the Pinot Grigio with force! While it’s fine to party once in a while, a good idea to ensure you don’t feel too bedraggled the next day is to alternate each glass of wine with a soft drink or some water.

Men: While boys may experience beer goggles on a night out, bear in mind that for one week a month you’ll be wearing your ‘ovulation glasses’ so tread carefully when it comes to meeting someone new during this period. You don’t want to be declaring true love, only to realise he wasn’t quite right for you by the time your period arrives.
