The 5 Most Ridiculous Period Myths We’ve *Ever* Heard

Ok, so some of these myths go back to ancient times when the idea of women having periods was an absolute shocker for society. Worryingly, though, some others are more recent. Go figure.

You’re more likely to be attacked by a shark when you’re on your period

We all know sharks love blood and technically they could sniff you out if you were having the mother of all periods, however, the amount of blood produced during a regular period is so small that a shark would have difficulty finding you based on that alone. There’s also a lot of background ‘noise’ in the ocean so any blood you did lose would be diffused in no time.

If you are worried about swimming or diving in shark-infested waters during your period, take heart by the fact you are 45,000 times more likely to be killed by a car than a shark!

You can lose your virginity by using a tampon

Let’s just get this straight, you can only lose your virginity by having sex! A tampon might (but highly unlikely) break your hymen, however a number of other things can also do this such as riding a horse or doing gymnastics. A broken hymen however does not mean you are no longer a virgin – you need a member of the opposite sex to help with that one…

People can tell when you’re on your period

We’re not sure where this myth came from but it’s absolutely false – well, unless you go around wearing a T-shirt saying ‘I’m on my period’, which would be kinda cool actually.

You shouldn’t eat anything cold or touch ice during your period

While we all know that a hot water bottle can make your cramps feel better, the myth goes that touching ice or eating cold food actually makes cramps worse. Anyone who has inhaled a bucket of Ben & Jerry’s during their period knows this is total twaddle.

You must not visit the dentist when it’s your time of the month

Way before the world really understood what a period was, women who bled were seen as unclean. It was felt that during the period of bleeding they could contaminate things, so were advised not to touch flowers or fruits for fear of killing them. This same strange old way of looking at things also brought to life the myth that any fillings inserted during a period will fall out. We suppose it’s one excuse not to go to the dentist.
