#TotesEmosh: This Lonely OAP Just Made Our Hearts Melt

Joe Bartley is a true inspiration. Seriously, get the tissues out before you even start reading…

The 89-year-old widower has been living by himself in Devon for the last two years since his wife Cassandra passed away. With no children to call upon as well as little family and friends, he felt as though he was living in isolation.

“I miss my wife dreadfully, and when you live on your own there is no one to speak to. Since she died I’ve moved into a flat and it’s a big block. Once you walk into that flat it’s like solitary confinement,” he told The Guardian.

But rather than sink further into solitude, army veteran Joe decided to take action by placing a personal advert in his local newspaper to find a job.

“Senior citizen, 89, seeks employment in Paignton area. 20hrs+ per week. Still able to clean, light gardening, DIY and anything. I have references. Old soldier, airborne forces. Save me from dying of boredom!”

Prepare for the flood of tears because not only did Joe’s advert (and amazing attitude) get a huge, heartwarming response on social media, an old friend of his got in touch and he was offered a job!

He began his trial shift at Cantina Bar and Kitchen in Paignton, Devon on Sunday and was greeted with applause and cheers on arrival *wipes eyes again*.

“I really enjoyed that welcome. It was quite a reception. For the last three or four days, it’s been hectic. I’ve had photos, film cameras, the whole lot. I feel a bit under pressure really, but it’s all very good stuff in the long run,” said the pensioner.

“Thank you everyone.”giphy (37)
