Gareth Gates: “I’d love to see Cuppanut on Bake Off!”
He’s the former Pop Idol star who reinvented himself as a entrepreneur with his fledgling business, Cuppanut, featured in this month’s box. When Pink Parcel caught up with Gareth Gates to find out more about his coconut infusion drink, it’s clear that whether it’s chart toppers or supermarket sell outs, he’s still aiming high.
“We were fortunate to land our first major listing with Holland and Barett this year,” the 32-year-old divulged to PP, “But in 2017 I’d love to get a supermarket. Tesco and Sainsbury’s would be the dream. We’re a brand new product though – there’s nothing else like us on the market, so it might take time to convince the big stores.”
The Bradford-born entrepreneur hasn’t let his lack of experience deter him, “I didn’t have a clue about the food and drink industry or business in general. That’s been the biggest challenge. Now I have three staff to manage and constant orders to oversee; two to three a week from Holland and Barrett and others from hotels and independent stores.”
It’s clear that Gareth is serious about succeeding in his new venture, “I look up to people like Alan Sugar and Peter Jones. Now that I’m in the world of business, I dream of being a dragon one day!”
Not that the 32-year-old has turned his back on performing entirely, “I’m constantly on tour. I’m currently performing in Footloose. So my office is on the road. I’m in different cities every week, in different apartments or hotels. I’ve got it sorted now. I work on the business during the day and perform at night.
His busy schedule is not for the faint hearted. He says, “I’m up around 9:30 and start business at 10. There’s always plenty of emails to respond to. Around lunchtime every day I head to the gym – I have to be fit for the show – at one point I’m stripped to just a pair of gold hotpants! Then I’ll come back and do some work. I head to the theatre at 6pm, the show starts at 7:30pm and I finish about 10:30pm. It’s a long day but I love it.”
“I love it seeing bars and restaurants using Cuppanut in different ways. I was at one of my favorite hotels recently, Rudding Park in Harrogate, and they’ve created a cocktail using our Cuppanut cranberry flavour. It had vodka, agave nectar, raspberry liqueur and egg white and it was incredible!
“I’ve also been approached by a pastry chef who wants to use it in his desserts too. I’d love to see Cuppanut being used in GBBO – that would be amazing!“
