12 Cool Ways To Get More Lemons In Your Life

You know the saying; when life gives you lemons, make frickin’ lemonade. But that’s not all you can do with this fabulously zesty fruit. There are tons of cool ways to work a lemon – not only are they a mega-source of Vitamin C, calcium, magnesium, potassium, minerals and antioxidants, they are super-useful in random ways like lightening your nails, cleaning your house and even will help lift your PMS mood. Yes really.

Here’s a few ideas for getting more lemon-love going on in your life…

1. Flush out toxins

Lemon is a diuretic, so it helps the production of urine and makes you want to wee – it can reduce inflammation and flush out toxins and bacteria from the bladder, helping prevent icky urinary tract infections such as cystitis.

2. Prevent high blood pressure

Did you know that half a lemon squeezed into a glass of water could lower your blood pressure? To get the maximum benefits, squeeze into a cup of warm water as soon as you get up in the morning and drink it before your usual breakfast, cup of tea or coffee.

3. Lift your mood

Lemon water can brighten your mood and relieve stress so can help around the time of your period. Lemon is one of the few foods that contains more negative charged ions, providing your body with more energy when it enters the digestive tract.

4. Freshen a stinky fridge

Sometimes, no matter how much you clean a fridge, it can still have a funny pong about it. Dab lemon juice on a cotton ball or sponge and leave it in the fridge overnight to absorb those whiffy food smells.

5. Lighten your nails

Nails start to yellow as you get older or if you wear a lot of coloured nail polish, but you can lighten them by mixing a cup of water and the juice of a whole lemon in a bowl. Soak your fingers in the bowl for a few minutes and rinse off.

6. Sort dandruff

Got a flaky scalp going on that you can’t seem to shift? Get the lemons out. Massage two tablespoons of lemon juice into your scalp and rinse with water. Finish off by rinsing your whole hair with one teaspoon of lemon juice mixed with a cup of water. Do this every day until your dandruff has gone.

7. Treat chesty probs

Drinking lemon water can reduce yucky phlegm and can also help you breathe properly so can be relieving is you suffer from asthma. The vitamin C in lemons can also help with long-term respiratory disorders.

8. Bust a breakout

When you’re battling with a skin breakout around the time of your period, lemons can really help. Slice one in half and rub directly over oily skin. You can also mix up the juice of a lemon with a few drops of honey and dab with a cotton bud onto blackheads or big pimples. Rinse off and then lightly moisturise your skin as usual.

9. Prevent kidney stones

Regular slugs of lemon juice with water may increase the production of urinary citrate, a chemical in your wee that can help reduce kidney stones.

10. Clean your place

Ditch the cleaning products overloaded with chemicals because lemon juice works just as well for busting bacteria around the house. Mix up a homemade solution of lemon juice with a few drops of vinegar to get mirrors and sinks and surfaces squeaky clean.

11. Freshen breath

Pucker up. Did you know lemons are wonder-ingredient for your oral health? A daily gargle reduces bad breath and stops bleeding gums. It can also help when you have toothache.

12. Slow the ageing process

Lemon water is an antioxidant and reduces the production of free radicals which are responsible for aging skin and skin damage. Every little helps, huh?
