Which Skincare And Make-Up Brands Are Paraben-Free?

Parabens, sulphates, mineral oils – knowing what to avoid in the quest for clean beauty can be confusing. Read on to discover our favourite paraben-free brands and get the low-down on exactly what parabens are and why you just don’t need them in your life!

What are parabens?

Parabens are type of preservative that’s added to skincare products and cosmetics to prolong their shelf life. They prevent mould and bacteria from growing and stop products from going off. The parabens used most commonly in cosmetics are methylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben and ethylparaben.

Why are parabens bad?

As these chemicals are absorbed through the skin, they could potentially affect the endocrine system and our hormones. There has been concern about the possible link between antiperspirants, which contain parabens, being linked to breast cancer. Studies have shown that some parabens can mimic the activity of the hormone, oestrogen, in the body’s cells, which is worrying as estrogenic activity is associated with some types of breast cancer. In one study, preservatives were found in the samples of tissue taken from breast tumours.

What do parabens do to the skin?

Parabens are not necessarily bad for the skin, it’s the potential effect that they could have on the body after they’ve been absorbed into the bloodstream that is of concern.

What paraben-free make-up brands can I use?

Most make-up brands use parabens but some will have paraben-free products, which you can identify by their paraben-free label. Laritzy is a paraben-free make-up brand that only uses vegan-friendly, skin-loving ingredients. Another strictly paraben-free brand is The Beauty Crop – we love their make-up collection which features superfood ingredients for your skin!

What paraben-free skincare brands are there?

Switching to paraben-free body wash, body lotion and deodorant is a good place to start when it comes to detoxifying your beauty routine. Using organic essential oils, instead of perfume, is another natural alternative. If you want to shop paraben-free beauty but don’t know where to start, discover the best organic and cruelty-free brands at The Pink Shop.
