The Best Antioxidants To Add To Your Skincare Routine

You’ve probably heard of antioxidants – it’s the beauty buzzword we should all be getting on board with, but do you know exactly what they are and why sliding these wonder compounds onto your bathroom shelf makes sense? Let’s see why antioxidants will take your skincare game to the next-level.

What’s the deal with antioxidants?

Antioxidants are natural occurring molecules that can be found on supermarket shelves in both super foods and everyday items such as coffee and tea (flavonoids and phenolic acid) vegetables and fruits (vitamins), chocolate (flavanols) and wine (resveratrol).

It’s important that we get antioxidants from food – in fact certain antioxidants such as Vitamin A, C and E, are crucial to our health, but it’s now also a beauty game-changer to feature these power molecules in your skincare routine too.

When it comes to preventing skin damage and slowing down the ageing process, antioxidants are essential as they fight back against harmful free radicals.

So what are free radicals?

The air, the materials around us, and our own bodies contain free radicals – which are best described as unstable molecules that attack and affect the function, growth and repair of cells in our bodies.

“Pollution, sunlight and smoking trigger the production of more free radicals. They attach themselves to healthy cells in an attempt to make themselves more stable. As a result, the healthy cells become free radicals too. Our bodies need some free radicals as they play a vital part in fighting bacteria, but when we have more free radicals than antioxidants, we suffer oxidative stress, which causes cells to become damaged. To counteract oxidative stress, our body produces an army of antioxidants. I like to imagine these as calm, mediator cells. They bring free radicals back into balance, without being compromised themselves,” explains A-list facialist and author of Love Your Skin, Abigail James.

Having a diet high in antioxidants ensures overall health and a beautiful complexion – plus loading your beauty bag with them will further help to protect against skin damage and ageing. Here are four of our favourite products that work hard to fight free radicals.
