Glycolic, Hyaluronic and Lactic Acid: Getting Under The Skin of Beauty Jargon

Sponsored by NIP+FAB

Ever read the back of your lotion and potion bottles and thought why didn’t I do a Science degree so I could understand what I’m putting on my face? It raises a few questions, right? Like, what is lactic acid? What does ‘hyaluronate’ mean? And what on earth is it doing to our skin?!

This month’s PP hero, NIP+FAB’s glycolic fix cleansing pads, has plenty of helpful acids inside to rejuvenate skin. But what does the beauty jargon on the back actually mean?

We’re demystifying the main ingredients so you can understand the bare-faced truth of the matter.

Glycolic Acid

The key ingredient of the cleansing pads is glycolic acid, which retextures the skin to reveal a new, smooth complexion. Glycolic acid is an alpha-hydroxy acid (AHAs) which means it blasts away dead skin cells. How, you ask? The acid actually speeds up the regeneration of cells which means the brighter, plumper skin is exposed.

Hyaluronic Acid

Brace yourselves, hyaluronic acid isn’t actually an acid. It’s a sugar. Seriously. It’s also found naturally within our body (we knew those family-sized bars of Dairy Milk were going somewhere). It allows our skin to stay plump by holding moisture between cells but sadly the levels in our skin decrease as we age. Whilst we might lose it naturally, it can be topped up with the right products – hence why it’s one of the beauty world’s hero ingredients! It’s also one of the speediest (non-surgical) ways to look more youthful.

Lactic Acid

Lactic acid is a probiotic, a word which we often associate with the ‘friendly’ bacteria in yoghurts. While bacteria is great for our gut, it’s not the only place that benefits. It maintains the natural pH balance of your complexion and can have a positive impact on the structure of the skin’s collagen, making it more resilient. If you have damaged skin, this ingredient can strengthen and repair resulting in younger looking skin!

So basically, NIP+FAB’s glycolic cleansing pads mean youthful, smooth, vibrant skin. We’re totally on board with that. Shop the full NIP+FAB range in store at Superdrug or online today.
