Sideline Your Contour Stick, Bronzer Is Back

Spring is within touching distance, which means it’s time to refresh your beauty bag. The weather may not have got the memo *just* yet, but the Spring Equinox, which officially marks the change in season, falls on 20th March and we want to be ready to celebrate the start of longer days and shorter nights.

Well, we’ve got some great news: very much like this year’s brow trends, the SS18 catwalks feature a more laid-back, luminous look, with the likes of Mary Katrantzou, Emilia Wickstead and Saint Laurent debuting a softer, natural glow this time around. So put down that contour kit, the season of blushers and bronzers has arrived.

How to nail that natural glow

Firstly, create an even base by moisturising, then sliding on a light or medium coverage foundation and finishing with concealer. Then, grab a powder brush with a rounded edge – we recommend this one by New CID Cosmetics – and collect the bronzer in a circular motion.

The secret to a subtle but beautiful glow is to apply your product to the parts of the face where the sun would naturally fall. For the best results, start by applying the bronzer in the shape of a ‘3’, so from the side of the forehead, along the hairline and into the cheekbone, then back again to end up along the jawline. Build the powder a little more along your cheekbone and jawline, before adding powder along the bridge of your nose.

Using a fresh brush, run over your skin in circular motions to completely blend and avoid any harsh lines. This can be a blusher brush, another powder brush or even an actual blending brush (this brush set from The Beauty Crop has all three). Sorted!

Which bronzer should I choose?

Whether subtle shimmer or full-on bronze is your style, try a bronzer two shades darker than your natural skin tone. Fairer skin tends to suit a peachy palette, while medium to darker tones look amazing with a red-tone bronzer, or golden brown. If you’re unsure which shade suits you, you can buy a range of palettes, like these Hikari quads, to experiment with.

Bronzers like these are also great as they contain light reflective shimmer particles, which reduce the appearance of fine lines. Alternatively, marbleised bronzers will add some depth, giving you that airbrushed finish – New CID Cosmetics i-glow has three different palettes, each with a handy compact mirror, so you can colour match to your skin.
