The Blusher Tips That Nobody Ever Told You About

Blusher is the hero in our a/w makeup bag – it adds a flush of colour (yep, we’re missing our summer glow already), accentuates the cheekbones and makes you look that little bit perkier in the morning. We’ll have some of that.

But it’s not just a case of just sucking your cheeks in and whacking it on, applying your blush strategically to suit your face shape can be the difference between flattering your bone structure with a natural rosy glow and looking like Amy Schumer in *that* sketch.

Want to know the right way to handle the rouge? Find your face shape below, grab the MUA Whipped Velvet Blush in this month’s Pink Parcel and follow our tips.

If your face is oval

An oval face is considered the most versatile of face shapes and is determined if the length of your face measures 1½ times its width. Generally, an oval face shape has pretty prominent cheekbones. To accentuate these, apply your blusher midway on the apples of your cheeks and sweep diagonally upwards towards the temples.

If your face is round

Round faces have soft, non-angular features and full cheeks, with the width of the forehead, cheekbones and jaw being almost equal. The goal of applying blusher here is to create definition. Apply it slightly above the apples of your cheeks and sweep outwards at a 45° angle to slim the face – avoid blending too close to the nose as this will highlight cheek roundness.

If your face is heart-shaped

Heart-shaped faces look a little like an inverted triangle – think high cheekbones that are wider than the hairline, a gently narrowing jawline and pointy chin. To soften the cheekbones on a heart-shaped face, brush your blusher on the bottom of your cheekbone (where you’d usually contour) and brush upwards towards your ears.

If your face is long

This face shape is slender and longer than it is wide. If you have a long face, you’ll probably have slim features and can sometimes appear gaunt. You can add width to the face by applying blusher to the apples of your cheeks and sweeping it horizontally outwards towards your ears. Blend well to avoid a stripe.

If your face is square

Similar to round faces, a square face also measures almost equally in width across the forehead, cheekbones and jawline. The difference though is that your features will be strong and angular, rather than soft. If you have a square face it’s likely you’ll be photogenic and will probably age well. Apply your blusher with the intention of softening sharp angles and creating roundness – brushing blusher directly onto the apples of your cheeks will do this.
