We LOVE celebrating our female bodies here at Pink Parcel and support everyone and anyone with a positive message about periods, which is why these women have just hit the number 1 spot on our heroine list.
Meet The Clams – an Australian book-club-turned-water-ballet-team who are smashing the taboos around menstruation.
Yep, you heard right.
A group of 30 awesome synchronised swimmers are gearing up to perform a routine called 'Crimson Tide: A Period Piece', which uses tampon-shaped floats and a huge piece of red fabric to act out the four stages of the monthly cycle.
(Is this not the best idea for a biology/P.E. lesson ever!?)
Francis van Beek, the woman behind The Clams, told Pedestrian.tv: "Normalising periods is a huge part of [it]. I hope it will help create conversation and reduce the stigma of openly discussing menstruation. It's also a great show of body positivity – with ladies of all shapes and sizes on the team."
The team will be performing their unique pool show in Melbourne on 18th March, with the money from their ticket sales going to Share the Dignity – a charity that provides homeless women with sanitary essentials.
One swimmer, Roz, who has her own line of sustainable sanitary pads, hopes the performance will open up a wider conversation about menstruation around the world.
"I wish that periods wouldn’t be seen as taboo, dirty or wrong. I wish that when girls get their periods in some countries that it doesn’t mean the end of their ability to go to school.
"I wish that people everywhere are adequately educated about menstruation, and have access to affordable, efficient and hygienic sanitary protection.
"Our menstrual cycles should be celebrated and understood, the peaks and troughs of the hormones associated can help us better understand ourselves, our emotions, our energy, our fertility. There is so much to know and for it to be hidden away as taboo is such a shame."
Anyone want to book us a flight to Australia in time for Saturday…?
