Wouldn’t it be easier if we were all more open about the perfectly normal bodily function we experience each month? We think so. Each week a member of our very own #PPSquad will be sharing her period stories with you. Read, comment, share your own. Every story is welcome here.
This week’s period talk is from Megan, our Assistant To Head of Partner Relations.
What’s your period craving?
"You know that moment when you don't actually know what a craving is because you spend your life feeling like you NEED to eat something? Yeah, that. I'm going to go with chocolate because it is my all time favourite thing to munch on – even more so when I'm on my period! I go for the massive £1 bar when that time of the month pops in to say hi and I definitely laugh at the “great for sharing” part."
I know my period is coming when…
"I'm one of many who actually suffer from terrible stomach cramps. They start about a week before I come on so I know once I feel that, that's it, it's begun. Not only that, I get SO emotional. It's actually funny, I will end up doing that weird thing where you laugh and cry at the same time!"
Tell us about your first period…
"How can I forget! I was about 12 years old, on holiday at my nan's house in France. Mum was out, I was in the toilet and then there it was, staring back at me like 'oh hey there, just come to ruin your life!' I remember going into panic mode (typical Megan) and thinking 'OK, just find one of those tampon things' (who uses a tampon at that age!?) Anyway, for some weird reason my nan actually had some in her cupboard so I read the instructions and it said "get into the squat position", so there I was trying to force God knows what size tampon inside me! Me being me – prone to fainting/panicking/overall worrying – I started to feel really sick and began sweating. I could feel myself getting really dizzy and that was it...I fainted! Quite traumatic really. My nan ended up throwing a bucket of water over me. She's Irish..."
Tell us a period cringe (we’ve all got one, hey…)
"I'm sure I have plenty but there’s only one that really sticks out – it's worse than a cringe, though! I was at my brother's flat where he lives with his fiancée and I remember taking out my tampon and thinking 'where’s their bin!?' So, I left it on the side thinking I would wrap it in a tissue, go and find a bin or hide it under something in there, you know, like any normal person would. Anyway, fast forward a couple of hours later, I'm at home and I get a text from my brother's fiancée with a picture of my tampon just chilling there on the side saying, "Meg, is this yours?" I wanted to DIE! I was so embarrassed and quite ashamed! Having the memory of a sieve is another one of my great personality traits."
Your favourite thing to do when you have your period is…
"This is so easy for me to answer. Literally CHILL. Cozy up with a hot water bottle, watch as many documentaries as I can and eat as much chocolate and cake as humanly possible before I basically fall into a food coma."
