Ovulation could be the culprit when it comes to getting the sniffles!
Studies have shown that during ovulation, when an egg is a released and oestrogen peaks, women’s immune systems are actually weaker, meaning they are more susceptible to infection.
This happens to allow you to get pregnant more easily – too strong an immune system might kill of sperm. For those of us who aren’t trying to get pregnant, it can mean that your body becomes more susceptible to any lurking germs.
Ovulation happens mid-way during your cycle, so follow these tips to help boost your immunity around this time.
Eat iron rich food
People who are lacking in certain minerals and vitamins are prone to catch every cold going. Menstruation in particular zaps the body of iron so boost your diet with iron-rich foods such as beef, spinach and beans, or take iron supplements
Whether it’s going for a run or joining a Zumba class, regular exercise helps keep you healthy. It enhances your circulation, which in turn, allows your immune system to do what it needs to do and fight those germs.
Look after yourself
Obviously it’s good to always look after yourself but during ovulation it’s even more imperative to get enough sleep and to eat nourishing healthy food.
Stress definitely lowers the immune system so add that to ovulation and you’ve got double the chance of getting that cold that’s going round the office. Try some meditation, have a soak in the bath or attend a yoga class – try to lower your stress levels and stop those bugs!
