Living Periods

Period Pop Is A Thing Now

Periods. Half the world’s population has them once a month and yet mentions of them are noticeably absent from music, film and popular culture. The Debrief recently calculated that in ten years, the TV show Friends only mentioned periods once. That's one single time in 3,650 days. (It was in The One Where Rachel Has A Baby in case you're interested.)

So Vice magazine’s recent feature on a new music genre caught our attention. This week, they published an article championing writer Beulah Devaney’s newly crowned genre: ‘period pop

What is Period Pop?

Devaney’s obsession with songs devoted to menstruation, periods and PMS led to her creating her own musical canon of classic period pop tunes, because, in her own words, “In a world that’s constantly deeming periods gross and shameful, any track that free bleeds over the music industry is an instant classic in my eyes.”

Her period pop picks include:

Mary J Blige ‘PMS’.

Dolly Parton ‘PMS Blues’.

We'd like to add:

Janet Jackson: 'Feedback'

Sample lyric: "My swag is serious something heavy like a first day period"

Lily Allen: 'Sheezus'*

Sample lyric: "Periods, we all get periods/Every month, yo, that’s what the theory is/It’s human nature, another cycle" The song was actually banned from radio play because it was deemed 'offensive' for mentioning periods. Go figure.
