A survey conducted across a number of UK hospitals discovered that half of all car accident admissions involving women occurred just before and during their period.
The problem is down to progesterone, levels of which drop just before your period. This reduction can, for some women, cause problems with their co-ordination, affecting vision, movement and hand steadiness.
Just before your period starts, oestrogen levels also fall and this can cause a fuzzy brain and slower reaction times, meaning you’re less likely to see that crack in the pavement or catch the glass of water before it drops. Here's how to be less accident prone...
Take your time
In the week before and during your period, allow yourself lots of time to do things or go places. The more of a rush you’re in, the more chance you’ve got of being clumsy.
Go to bed early
Tiredness makes any situation worse so make sure you're getting plenty of sleep during the clumsy part of your menstrual cycle.
Get into yoga
A typical yoga class involves balance, strengthening exercises and meditation, all of which over time can help turn clumsy into graceful
Some foods such as broccoli, green beans and dates have been found to help boost low oestrogen levels, while magnesium-rich foods such as spinach, pumpkins and nuts can really help balance out your hormones.
Talk to your GP
For some women going on the contraceptive pill can really help with period-related clumsiness and tiredness.
