The internet has sparked many crazy trends: planking, Gangnam style, neknominate. But we think the latest is one of the worst. You may have seen the recent craze sweeping the internet called #PantyChallenge. It saw young women and girls sharing photos of their clean underwear, free of any of any signs of discharge. Apparently this is a good thing. *rolls eyes*
When we heard about the trend at Pink Parcel, we decided that as a company, we would take a stand against it. Why? Because the body shaming of women for something which is totally natural and beyond our control is not cool and we are calling it out. We want you to call it out too, by highlighting the ridiculousness of the trend and by talking about it with your friends. After all – if we label something our body does as disgusting, we are basically calling our body disgusting. And who wants to feel that way about their body?
Why the #PantyChallenge Is Not OK
Our resident doctor, Dr Yasmin Walters, explains why discharge is a normal part of being a woman. She says, “Discharge has a function, just like everything does in your body. Discharge helps your vagina clean itself and protect itself from infections.”
Think of it as functioning like saliva in your mouth. You wouldn’t be embarrassed about having moisture in your mouth – so why should it be any different when it’s in your vagina?
The amount and type of discharge you experience will be unique to you. What’s ‘normal’ for you is something you will learn over time. Dr Walters advises, “If your discharge ever becomes particularly smelly, itchy or you have any concerns, speak to your GP or sexual health clinic.”
Dr Walters continues, “Discharge isn’t embarrassing. It’s natural. It’s healthy. It’s part of what it is to be biologically female.” Amen to that.
