Sitting in the car on the open road has got to be the best mode of transport. Planes bring about two hours of faff, trains can be equally as long in delays, and actually we quite like the comfort of getting from A to B *our* way.
That feeling of sitting in the backseat at night, watching the bright lights of your hometown zoom by from the comfort of a nice warm cab (it is September, after all) is second to none, as are those pre-night out trips with the girls, where your driver cranks up the tunes and gets the party started.
Seeing the sights with your nose pressed against the window and having a laugh with your friends isn’t just confined to the 20-minute journey home though, you know. Why not hop in the backseat somewhere else in the world with one of the incredible road trips below...
For the sun searcher: Amalfi Coast, Italy
Driving down the Amalfi Coast is a sun searcher’s dream. Forget the motorsport races with fast cars; we’re talking low key pit stops, like the coastal towns of Minori and Maiori, and the buzzy villages of Positano and Sorrento. Blue as far as the eye can… ahem… sea. Feel the breeze in your freshly blow-dried locks (you’ll be hiring a convertible, obvs), eat and drink your way through each pit-stop on the journey and chat to the locals – you never know, there might be a free local delicacy in it for you!
For good ol’ cosy pubs: Emerald Isles, Ireland
A coastal drive of a very different variety is the one from the west to east of Ireland. This road trip should take you about a week, starting in Shannon and ending in the capital city of Ireland: Dublin. You’ll be awestruck by Connemara, and the Ring of Kerry, as you make your way around the isles, then reflect at the end of the day in a twee village pub. You’ll be immersed in the community of friendly, spritely locals before you know it.
For out-of-this-world of scenery: Iceland
Now this isn’t even a city to city trip, but an entire island road trip! If you can brave the elements, the N1 that runs around Iceland is over 830 miles (that’s 200 miles more than driving from the south of England to the north of Scotland), but it is SO worth it. The spectacular scenery, from snowy mountains to volcanic craters, and the blue lagoons and lava fields in between, will literally take your breath away… you know, if the cold doesn’t first.
For thrill seekers: Karakoram Highway, China/Pakistan
For a historically rich, but very heart-in-your-mouth journey, the Karakoram Highway connects China and Pakistan, and is the highest paved road in the WORLD. Yikes. Once we’ve found our height legs (kinda like sea legs), the route is absolutely stunning with many unexpected sights along the way. From epic mountains, to serene rivers, there are even rock art pieces that date back thousands and thousands of years.
For social currency: Route 66, USA
Where would a road trip list be without Route 66? Possibly the most famous of the lot, the route begins in Illinois and works its way west along the Mother Road, ending on Santa Monica Pier in California. Over 2,000 miles, you’ll drive through the states of Illinois, Missouri, Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California, taking in the unique sights of Cadillac Ranch (old Cadillacs planted in the ground, covered in the most amazing graffiti), the Grand Canyon, Grant Park, and many others. So what are you waiting for?
