We're already converted to the powers of chocolate, especially how a chunk or two of dark chocolate is good for your health – and your period – but our *favourite* study says we can up our chocolate intake. Hurrah!

A study published in medical journal Heart shows that eating chocolate on a regular basis can help prevent strokes or other heart-related deaths.

The study followed 21,000 people over 12 years who chomped their way through the sweet stuff in various amounts. The results showed that people who ate some chocolate regularly had a lower chance of suffering from heart-related diseases than those who ate none.

And it isn't just the dark stuff that has magic health properties either!  Those who ate milk chocolate also had the same benefits, which could be down to a combination of fatty acids and calcium that are found in milk chocolate.

While this study shows that regularly eating chocolate could be good for your heart, that doesn't mean you can start gobbling the good stuff for every meal.

Professor Aedin Cassidy, a nutritionist at the University of East Anglia, told the Daily Mail that chocolate should only be eaten occasionally as part of a well-balanced diet. Booooo.

"Chocolate also contains fat and sugar so only moderate intakes should be recommended as part of a healthy diet rich in fruits and vegetables," he said.

Still, we know what we’ll be snacking on with our afternoon cup of tea today… Chocolate anyone?
