We get it. You know about coconut oil. You cook with it because you know it’s healthier. You use it on your legs when you’re out of shaving cream for a super smooth finish. You probably use it as a body moisturiser too.
From DIY deodorant to homemade salad dressing, coconut oil is our (not-so) new-found saviour. In fact, we’d go so far as to say if we were preparing for a zombie-apocalypse, we’d have a stash of this stuff in our emergency cupboard. (Alongside paprika Pringles and Nairns cheesy oatcakes FYI.)
Here’s 9 clever uses for your coconut oil...
1. Natural deodorant
While there is no scientifically proven link to deodorant and disease, many people choose to avoid putting additional chemicals in their body. Coconut oil’s strong antibacterial properties means it can be used to create a chemical free deodorant. Simply mix it with arrowroot/cornstarch and baking soda as shown here.
2. Heal wounds quicker
One scientific study found that rats whose wounds were treated with coconut oil healed much faster than those without. Pop a small amount of coconut oil directly onto wounds and cover to promote faster healing.
3. Eye make-up remover
If you struggle to shift stubborn mascara – and your natural spirit animal is a panda – you’ll be interested to know that coconut oil makes removing your eye make-up a painless experience. Apply with a cotton pad, wipe gently and you’re done.
Yup. Coconut oil is perfect for when the action between the sheets needs a little extra help. As it’s made of oil, it’s a naturally effective lubricant and can double up as a cheeky massage oil too. Just remember it’s not a good idea to use with condoms as it may damage the latex.
5. Soothe chapped lips
Got dry, flaky lips which frankly your mum would struggle to peck? Do yourself a favour and grab an old toothbrush and gently scrub any dead skin off your lips. Then rub in a little coconut oil for truly kissable lips. ••Goes off to find David Gandy••
6. Polish wood
No, we don’t own anything wooden either. (Does our Billy bookcase count?) But if we did, we would be ecstatic to learn that coconut oil can keep your furniture shiny without the harsh scent of a commercial furniture polish. One to impress your mum with.
7. To season your cast iron pan
You know that cast iron pan you never use because everything sticks to it? It’s not faulty, it just doesn’t have a non-stick surface. Next time, coat it in some coconut oil before you begin cooking for a fuss-free experience.
8. Homemade salad dressing
Sidestep that shop-bought salad dressing which is often loaded with sugar in exchange for a homemade version like this one.
9. Lose weight
Studies suggest that coconut oil may help you burn fat in a number of different ways. One study found that the medium-chain triglycerides in coconut oil may reduce appetite, leading to a decrease in calorie intake. Another found that women on a calorie-restricted diet who had 2 tablespoons of coconut oil a day reduced their waist size while a group on a soybean oil equivalent actually increased theirs. Try two tablespoons a day in a cup of green tea.
