Whether it’s someone pushing in front of you in a queue or the kids leaving wet towels all over the bathroom again, PMS-induced irritability can strike at any time. Save yourself a mega meltdown with these tips…
If you feel like you’re about to snap at someone, take time to breathe properly. Take a deep breath in, counting to three, then exhale for a count of three. Carry on until you feel calm. Not only does this increase oxygen into your system, giving you an energy boost, but concentrating on something else will also give you space to feel less annoyed.
2. Put the kettle on
While herbal teas like chamomile and lemon balm are known for their calming properties, a cup of black tea can be just as effective at calming you down. A study by University College in London, showed the stress hormone cortisol dropped after volunteers enjoyed a cuppa.
A study by Keele University in Staffordshire showed that swearing not only reduces stress but also acts as a kind of painkiller - so next time you feel irritated shout, swear and drop the F bomb – but not in front of your boss or the kids…
4. Talk to yourself
Before you explode at your husband for not putting his dirty socks in the laundry basket, take a micro second to work out why this is actually bothering you. Are the dirty socks really the problem or has your husband done something else to upset you? Figuring out why you feel cross can often diffuse the situation and the way you handle it.
5. See the funny side
It may be hard to laugh when you’re suffering from PMS but faking it can make you feel better – and calmer. When you’re in a tense situation, try to see the funny side of things. Failing that, have a funny photo or saying on your phone, which you can reference when the going gets tough.
6. Massage your ear
There are certain acupuncture points on your body that you can massage to help calm yourself down. One of these is just inside the top of your ear – the area known as the fossa. This is one of the best acupuncture points to bring down stress levels and helps treat anger, frustration and impatience. Massage by placing a finger on the front and your thumb behind the area, applying firm pressure.
7. Walk away
While your instinct may be to fight, it’s often best to take flight instead and walk away from any situation that is making you cross. It gives you time to cool off and let those feelings of irritation and frustration fade away. If you have the time, walking for just 20 minutes a day is a good way to de-stress and improve your mood, especially if you do suffer from PMS anger.
